The Exwell Hydraulic-Set Permanent Packer is set in the well casing to divert casing-to-tubing flow.It is hydraulically set by applying pressure to the tubing string. This packer is mechanically locked inthe set position by the internal slip. An external set of opposing mechanical slips holds the packer against downward and upward forces. Once the packer is set, it cannot be released. However, the packer can be drilled or milled out. The lower thread is compatible with a mill-out extension. The Exwell hydraulic-set permanentpacker has a head compatible with Sur Latch seal assemblies. The packer is run to a predetermined depth, a ball is circulated down the tubing string to seal in thecatcher sub assembly, or a wireline-retrievable plug is landed in the landing nipple. Pressureapplied down the tubing string enters the ports in the lower end of the packer mandrel. The pressure acts against the piston shearing the start-to-set screws. The shear pins in the bottom slipsupport shear and allows the bottom slip to move up over the tapered wedge. The shear pins in thelower tapered wedge shear, allowing the wedge to move up. The elements are forced up againstthe upper wedge, causing the shear pins to shear and forcing the wedge under the upper slip. At this time, the upper slip engages the inside wall of the casing. The elements compress, forming aseal, and the lower slip engages the casing. The teeth on the internal slip engage the mandrel, holding the bottom slip support in position. The lug at the upper slip keeps the mandrel fromrotating during drilling or milling operation.
